The primary goals of the Family Support program are to:

  • strengthen individuals and families in the Greater Kansas City area by providing a variety of supports to increase a family's ability to live well in their local community

  • educate the public about the conditions of Cerebral Palsy and other developmental disabilities

 
 
Persons served:
  • Residents of Jackson, Clay, Platte counties in Missouri, or Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas

  • Individuals diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy or other Developmental Disabilities

Services:

  1. Information about the disability and support services available; referral to sources of support services; follow along support after information and referral.
  2. Financial assistance.
  3. Individual and Family Counseling.
  4. Advocacy
    1. Individual or case advocacy ensuring disabled persons their rights to appropriate services.
    2. Systems or class advocacy seeking to change a policy or practice, which affects disabled persons.
    3. Self-advocacy assistance provided to individuals and families who may only need guidance to advocate on their own behalf.
    4. Legislative advocacy as permitted by law.
  5. Respite Care and Sib Shop:  Held monthly on the first Friday at the Leawood Baptist Church at 8200 State Line Road in Leawood, Kansas, this program provides special needs enrichment or respite care from 6PM til 9 PM from October through May of any given year. Respite Care is available for children ages 6 months to 12 years old. The Sib Shop is a program especially designed for brothers and sisters of the special needs child, up to age 12 years old, and is held the same time as Respite Care!  Call the number listed below for the full schedule (some months are on the second Friday), and to process enrollment forms.  Cost is $3.00 for the first child; $2.00 for every child after that.  Volunteers help staff this program and have many years of experience in helping the child with special needs.
  6. Sports for Cerebral Palsy - "Sports by Ability, Not Disability." A year-round training program designed for athletes with physical disabilities, eight years and older who are not appropriate for Special Olympics. The program helps to develop sports skills, improve physical and mental fitness as well as provide atmosphere of individual and team goal getting.
  7. Public Education.
